Since 1996 • Active UK Exports • CAPEXIL Member • ISO-Certified • Direct Manufacturer
Indian Granite Manufacturer and exporter to United Kingdom
Direct from our Chennai factory to UK importers, monumental masons, kitchen worktop fabricators, and architectural projects across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Shipping to British buyers since 1996.
Three Decades of Supplying Indian Granite to the UK
Devinarayan Granites Ltd has been manufacturing and exporting natural stone from Chennai since 1996. We’re part of the Devinarayan Group, in the granite trade since 1982, with our own active quarries — Vizag Blue, Paradiso, Multicolour, and Indian Juparana — and a vertically integrated factory operation.
For UK buyers, that means one practical reality: when you order granite from us, you’re buying from the company that quarried the block, cut the slab, polished the surface, and packed the container. There’s no trader sitting in Delhi adding 15–25% to factory pricing, no broken telephone on specifications, no third-party quality slippage. Our Managing Director, Mr. Mahesh Narayanaswamy, sits on the Stone Panel of CAPEXIL (Government of India, Ministry of Commerce) and is a thrice-elected President of the Tamil Nadu Granite Quarry Owners Exporters Association.
As a direct Indian granite exporter to the UK, we currently supply importers, monumental masons, kitchen worktop fabricators, hotel and hospitality renovation contractors, architectural firms, and stone wholesalers across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Why British Buyers Import Indian Granite from India
The United Kingdom is among India’s leading granite export destinations, and the reasons are practical, not sentimental.
Color Range No European Supplier Matches
India produces over 100 commercially-quarried granite varieties, including the world-benchmark blacks (Absolute Black, Black Galaxy), the most-imported UK kitchen worktop colors (Tan Brown, Steel Grey, Kashmir White), and exotic options (Paradiso, Indian Juparana, Vizag Blue) that aren't available from European or domestic UK quarries.
Higher Density Than Most Alternatives
Indian granite typically delivers 2.65–2.75 g/cm³ density, 130–225 MPa compressive strength, and water absorption below 0.4% — physical properties that comfortably meet BS EN dimension stone requirements used by UK architectural specifiers.
Direct Factory Pricing vs European Alternatives
UK importers buying directly from Indian manufacturers typically pay 30–50% less than buying through European or domestic distributors carrying the same material. With Brexit-era supplier diversification accelerating across the UK construction and memorial trade, direct Indian sourcing has become a strategic procurement choice rather than just a cost decision.
Duty-Free Entry Under the UK Global Tariff
Worked granite imported into the UK under HMRC tariff codes 6802.23 and 6802.93 typically enters duty-free under the standard MFN tariff. Combined with VAT recoverability for VAT-registered UK importers, the net landed cost from India compares favourably with any sourcing option available in the British market.

Indian Granite Import Process from India to the UK
Buying granite from India to the UK is straightforward when the supplier handles documentation correctly. Here’s how we manage UK shipments end-to-end.
1. Inquiry & Quote
Send us your product spec — colour, dimensions, finish, thickness, quantity. We quote within one working day on FOB Chennai, CFR, or CIF basis (your choice).
2. Sample Approval
We ship physical samples of the granite colour and finish for your approval. For first-time UK orders, this is strongly recommended — it removes any surprise at container opening.
3. Pro Forma Invoice & Advance
Once specs and pricing are confirmed, we issue a pro forma invoice. Standard payment terms are 30% advance via wire transfer / TT, with the balance against shipping documents. Letter of Credit terms available for established repeat buyers.
4. Production
Manufacturing begins on advance receipt. Standard production timelines are 25–40 days depending on order size, customisation, and current production load. Custom monument and memorial work takes longer.
5. Quality Inspection
Pre-shipment inspection at our Chennai facility. Buyer or third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek) welcome. We document each container with photographs at the loading stage.
6. Container Loading & ISPM-15 Crating
Granite is packed in fumigated wooden crates with foam corner protection, strapped and braced inside the container to prevent shifting during sea transit. ISPM-15 compliant for UK entry. Bill of Lading issued.
7. Documentation Package
Complete export documentation provided: Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Certificate of Origin, Bill of Lading, ISPM-15 Fumigation Certificate, Phytosanitary Certificate, and any additional documents your UK customs broker requires.
8. UK Customs Clearance via CDS
Your UK customs broker files the import declaration through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service (CDS), which replaced the older CHIEF system in 2022. Container released for delivery to your fabrication unit, monumental masonry yard, warehouse, or project site.
Total transit time from india to UK: typically 28–35 days depending on routing and transshipment.
UK Customs, Documentation, and VAT for Indian Granite
UK Commodity Codes
Granite shipments to the UK are classified under HMRC commodity codes: 6802.23 (worked granite, simply cut or sawn), 6802.93 (further-worked granite, including polished slabs and finished worktops), 6802.93.90 (granite headstones, memorials). UK commodity codes are 10 digits in full — your customs broker confirms the exact subheading at entry.
EORI Number — Mandatory
Every UK importer must hold an EORI number (Economic Operator Registration and Identification) before importing granite from outside the UK. EORI registration is handled through HMRC, takes around 3 working days, and is free. Without it, customs clearance simply cannot be completed.
BTI Rulings
For new importers or unusual product specifications, a Binding Tariff Information (BTI) ruling from HMRC provides legally binding classification confirmation, valid for 3 years. Useful for projects with ongoing volume where classification certainty matters.
Import Duty
Most worked granite under HMRC commodity codes 6802.23 and 6802.93 enters the UK duty-free under the standard UK Global Tariff. Confirm specific subheadings with your customs broker — duty rates are subject to occasional revision.
VAT (20%)
Standard UK VAT at 20% applies on the duty-paid value of imported granite. VAT-registered UK importers reclaim this through their normal VAT return, making the net VAT cost zero for trade buyers. This is a critical procurement consideration — VAT cash flow rather than absolute cost is what matters for VAT-registered businesses.
Customs Declaration (SAD / C88)
UK import declarations are filed through CDS using the Single Administrative Document (SAD), historically referred to as Form C88. Your customs broker handles this filing using the documentation we provide.
Northern Ireland Routing
Granite shipments to Northern Ireland follow modified routing under the Windsor Framework (which replaced the Northern Ireland Protocol in 2023). Most direct India-to-NI shipments are treated as standard imports. Granite transiting via Great Britain to NI may require additional declarations depending on whether the goods are classified as "at risk" of onward movement to the EU.

- Certificate of Origin (issued by Government of India / Chamber of Commerce)
- Bill of Lading

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the minimum order for shipping granite from India to the UK?
Our minimum order is one full container. A 20ft container holds approximately 2,200–2,500 sq ft of finished worktops, or 16–20 gangsaw slabs. We work with first-time UK importers placing a single container as well as established fabricators running multi-container programmes.
How long does shipping take from Chennai to the UK?
Production lead time is typically 25–40 days from order confirmation. Sea freight from Chennai to UK ports is roughly 28–35 days depending on routing and transshipment. Total order-to-delivery typically runs 60–80 days.
What duty and VAT will I pay on Indian granite imported to the UK?
Most worked granite under HMRC commodity codes 6802.23 and 6802.93 enters the UK duty-free under the standard UK Global Tariff. Standard 20% UK VAT applies on the duty-paid value, but VAT-registered UK importers reclaim this through their normal VAT return — net VAT cost for trade buyers is zero.
Do I need an EORI number to import granite from India?
Yes. Every UK importer must hold a valid EORI number before importing from outside the UK. Registration is handled through HMRC, takes around 3 working days, and is free. Without an EORI, customs clearance cannot be completed.
Do you provide BS EN test certificates for architectural projects?
Yes. For architectural specifications requiring BS EN compliance, we provide material test reports per BS EN 1936 (density and water absorption), BS EN 1926 (compressive strength), BS EN 12372 (flexural strength), and BS EN 1925 (capillary absorption). Reports are colour-specific and based on independent third-party testing.
Can you supply UKCA-marked granite for regulated construction applications?
For granite supplied into UK construction applications requiring UKCA marking (which replaced CE marking post-Brexit), supporting documentation is provided on request. Confirm requirement at the order stage.
How does shipping to Northern Ireland work post-Brexit?
Granite shipments to Northern Ireland follow the Windsor Framework. Most direct India-to-NI shipments are treated as standard imports. Granite transiting via Great Britain to NI may require additional declarations depending on classification — your UK customs broker will advise based on routing.
What payment terms do you offer first-time UK buyers?
Standard terms for first-time orders are 30% advance via wire transfer / TT, with the balance against shipping documents. Letter of Credit (L/C at sight) terms are available for established repeat buyers.
Do you provide samples before bulk orders?
Yes — and we strongly recommend it for first-time UK orders. Sample tiles of the granite colour and finish are dispatched for your approval before container production begins.
What thickness should I order — 20mm or 30mm?
For UK kitchen worktops, 30mm is the standard thickness — better edge integrity without requiring laminated build-up. 20mm is typical for bathroom vanity tops and lighter cladding work, often laminated to give a thicker visual edge. For tile and architectural cladding, specifications vary by application.
Who handles UK customs clearance — you or me?
UK customs clearance is handled by your UK customs broker through HMRC’s CDS (Customs Declaration Service). We provide all required export documentation. For first-time UK importers, we can recommend customs brokers with experience in granite imports.
What if material arrives damaged or below specification?
We document every container with photographs at the loading stage and pre-shipment inspection records. If damage occurs in transit, marine insurance handles the claim — your insurance broker will use our pre-shipment records to support it. For material disputes on specification, we work directly with the importer to resolve through replacement, credit, or refund.
